Research Statement
Past research and publications on classical Islamic historiography, rural-urban relations in Syria during the 10th-13th centuries, and North African social history in the 19th century. Numerous articles and chapters on Islam, Islamism, and contemporary social questions in the Middle East. Currently engaged in two book projects, one a world history text (with two co-authors), and the other a monograph on regional axial age differences and their intellectual consequences, tentatively entitled "The Grand Detour."
